I still think he'll come good, it's still an adjustment from the Bundesliga.

His poor footwork really worries me though.

When he has the ball at his feet he is a cool cat though, like his ball distribution.

what i don't understand is, how does he lose so many headers against smaller players when he should be winning them most of the time easily. I like his simple defensive game but really, in the air and tracking his man during set pieces, he should be way way sharper like kos or verms.

Probably our worst player today. But he will be important with so many games coming up in CL, CC FA and League. I think a Kos - Verm partnership will be a lot better.

Been telling people that he's garbage for over a year now...

Absolutely appalling today, could have cost us the game. How a 6'6" guy can be so damn poor in the air is beyond me, he's only won about 35% of his headers this season.

i think the tempo and pace of the premier league have been more difficult for mertesacher to adapt to than we could have hoped for.

Was shocked at how somebody would perform so poorly, making elementary mistakes in a big game like that.

Notice Szczesny telling the defenders where to stand.

I think the bigger problem is that we don't work on defending enough in training more than the defenders being bad. When Szczesny was telling them where to stand that pretty much confirmed to me that Wenger doesn't tell who to mark before the game.

Still, Koscielny was our best defender today and should start with Vermaelen against West Brom next week. (Mertesacker and Koscielny vs Marseille.)

Mertesacker has barely been tested!!! That's why no one can really judge a proper conclusion on him. I'm not saying he's bad or good he's just incredibly suspect when he does get tested out

You know, you could have made a little bit sense IF his mistakes was late in the second half, in which they don't...

He had a poor game today, that's a fact, but saying he is rubbish after 1 bad game is way over the top.

Mertesacker is struggling with the non stop pace of the EPL, if you watch the Bundesliga it's way slower than the EPL. Today's game was end to end 100 mile an hour stuff and he struggles to keep his concentration levels up. He will improve he's not played as many Club and Internationals matches at a top level because he's rubbish .....

Mertesacker has been good for us. Slightly less of a performance today but it was a massive test for him and he didn't really do that badly, just look at Terry. He still needs time to adapt to this league, he has all the qualities of a CB so time is what he needs. I do stick to my point that he needs to start jumping more because he relies on his height too much and often you see a shorter guy out jumping him.

Mertesacker had his first poor game today and was at fault for 2 of the goals, but you've never seen such shocking stuff? Have you watched our defence in the last few seasons?

This forum is so incredibly knee-jerk. Mertesacker has been good so far, had a poor game today. Thats really all there is to it.
